RVMS Design Committee
Posted: July 1, 2009 at 11:21 amThe RVMS Design Committee seeks to enrich and preserve the unique character of Roslindale’s business district as a safe, clean and visually appealing place to live and visit. The committee provides design assistance to businesses through facade and signage improvement grants, as well as direct consultation on architecture, storefront design and visual marketing. The committeee also pursues streetscape projects, such as wayfinding signage, greenspace, lighting and public art, to unify the neighborhood and define it as a social and commercial hub.
The Public Art Committee is an ad-hoc subcommittee of the Design committee which focuses on fundraising and community planning for public art projects in the neighborhood.
Recent and ongoing projects include:
- Leveraged public-private partnershipsfor 41 facade improvements in the district since 1996 , including a block-long historic preservation project on Corinth Street in 2002. Recent facade improvement projects include Vorous Pastry Shop, Ron’s Automotive, Law Offices of Pofcher, DiSciullo and Petruzziello, Dandelions, Jimmies Ice Cream and Sandwiches, Birch Street House & Garden, and Centre Cuts.
- Provided design assistance through direct consultation to 7 businesses in 2009.
- Provided consultation on design considerations for the new Staples development on Washington Street, advocating for an urban-appropriate, pedestrian oriented design.
- Planned a multi-stage environmental graphics project to brand and identify the Roslindale Village neighborhood, including an information kiosk at the corner of South and Poplar Streets and colorful gateway markers at district entrances (both scheduled for installation in 2010).
- Sponsored public art projects including murals on Birch and Cohasset Streets, a historic tile project in Adams Park, and a public sculpture by artist George Greenamyer at the intersection of Belgrade Avenue and Corinth Street (planned for installation in 2010)
- Hosted a business networking breakfast in 2009 to discuss recent zoning changes affecting signage regulations in the district and provide an overview of RVMS’ design assistance program.
- Researched and implemented holiday lighting for the business district, using funds raised from the annual Taste of Roslindale benefit.
