RVMS Economic Development Committee
Posted: July 1, 2009 at 10:06 amThe Economic Development Committee works to strengthen the Village’s economic base by helping existing businesses become stronger, supporting new businesses, and recruiting new ventures that respond to community needs. The committee also actively advocates for appropriate redevelopment of vacant commercial sites.
Examples of ongoing and recent projects include:
- Welcome and assist new businesses in the district, including most recently Geoffrey’s Cafe, Robyn’s Bar and Grill, One on One Eye Care, Jimmies Ice Cream and Sandwiches, El Chavo Mexican Products, Select Cafe, Gypsy Boutique, Colorwheel Collection, and Cafe Rialto.
- Research and recruit new businesses to improve the retail mix and reduce vacancies; outreach and assistance/information provided to 12 prospective businesses in 2009
- Refer local businesses to technical assistance resources, including financing, permitting, legal, marketing and business management support. 56 businesses received assistance referrals or direct assistance from RVMS in 2009.
- Co-sponsored,with Historic Boston Inc., a 2004 feasibility study for redeveloping the vacant MBTA substation at Washington Street and Cummins Highway, which has been used by the Boston Redevelopment Authority to establish criteria for developing the property.
- Provide support and guidance to prospective developers of the substation site, along with the long-abandoned gas station site on the same block, advocating for appropriate redevelopment in accordance with Main Street values of walkability, economic sustainability, historic preservation, and a healthy and diverse business mix.
- Actively participated in drafting of 2008 zoning changes for Roslindale Village through participation in focus groups and community meetings.
- Conducted a comprehensive resident survey in 2007 to assess the business district’s strengths, consumer demographics and priorities for improvement, and shared results with business owners at a district-wide networking breakfast.
- Advocated for appropriate redevelopment of the former Ashmont Discount site (now Staples), helping galvanize community support and input into the development process.
- Worked with MIT Department of Urban Studies and Planning to produce a comprehensive 2005 market analysis and planning study of Roslindale Village, with case studies and specific recommendations for enhancing the neighborhood’s assets.
- Currently working with Tufts University Department of Urban and Environmental Planning to develop a study on economic development and transportation in Roslindale Village.
