Farmers' Market to Open Saturday, June 13 Seeking 2009 Farmers' Market Manager A Foodie's Paradise Local UpdatesFamily Dollar will be opening on Corinth Street in the next few months, and RVMS has been working to ensure that the store's presence in the business district will be a positive one. Last month we met with representatives from the chain to offer input on storefront improvements, including installing appropriate signage and lighting and upgrading the building's run-down façade. We will continue to actively encourage Family Dollar to be a responsible and good neighbor in the community, while bringing more customers to the center of our business district. Down the street past Village Market, Jimmies Ice Cream and Sandwiches will be opening its doors in mid-May. The old-fashioned ice cream parlor will feature take-out hard and soft serve ice cream, hot dogs and tofu pups, and lobster rolls. Roslindale Village Main Street has provided design and fabrication assistance to help the storefront enliven the block, and we look forward to welcoming Jimmies just in time for the summer months. Another storefront improvement project made possible by a Main Street grant is underway at 749 South St., where a sleek new sign now announces the law offices of Pofcher, DiSciullo and Petruziello (which has been at that location for over 10 years). Look for further improvements to the building's façade and other three storefronts as the season progresses. Development Proposal for Old Gas Station Site Approved by BRA After a positive response at community meetings late last year, a proposal to build a 3-story commercial and office building on the abandoned gas station site next to the Roslindale Branch Library is gaining momentum. In early February the plan was approved by the Boston Redevelopment Authority, and construction is expected to begin later this year. The building would house the Social Security Administration on the second floor, with offices on the top floor and retail space at ground level. Read about the project in the Roslindale Bulletin and the Boston Globe. MBTA Substation Development Proposals Under Review For six years, RVMS has been the lead advocate for redevelopment of the vacant brick substation at Washington Street and Cummins Highway. In November, developers presented three different plans to the Boston Redevelopment Authority for this grand neighborhood landmark, and the community is eagerly awaiting a decision. Which one is the best for Roslindale? Click here for a short review of the proposals by Main Street's Economic Development committee. To read the three proposals in their entirety, click here.
