Help Roslindale Thrive - Become A Member of RVMS
During these difficult economic times, all of us who live or work in Roslindale have a stake in supporting a vibrant and healthy neighborhood district. For 24 years, Roslindale Village Main Street has worked to strengthen the Village's economic vitality, physical appearance and unique local character. We are an independent, nonprofit organization that relies on the support of residents like you. Whether you are a current member or a newcomer, please consider making a donation now to help us continue to provide the programs, services and events that help make Roslindale a great place to live, work and shop.

You can make a difference in your neighborhood by joining RVMS this year with a membership contribution of $25 or more. Donate online right now or look for our annual appeal letter in your mailbox later this week. With your help, we will continue our work to strengthen and protect your investment in this community. Click here for more details on our plans for the coming year.

Farmers' Market to Open Saturday, June 13
The Roslindale Farmers' Market will kick off this year on Saturday, June 13 with an exciting array of new vendors, including 4 local farms and 8 local specialty vendors. Visitors to this year's market can expect to find a variety of fresh local produce each week, along with plants, beef & pork, eggs, fresh breads and baked treats, preserves, and handmade gifts. The market will provide a lively community gathering place each Saturday from 9 am-1 pm through October 17, with weekly live music and kids' activities being planned. Seeking 2009 Farmers' Market Manager
Roslindale Village Main Street is currently seeking a part-time seasonal manager for the Farmers' Market. This is a paid, 10-hour weekly position. Click here for more information.

A Foodie's Paradise
Did you know that last month the Boston Globe Magazine deemed Roslindale a Top Spot to Live for Foodies. No surprise to those of us that live here and enjoy the neighborhood's abundance of fresh markets, bakeries and restaurants every day, but it's nice to know that we're getting noticed by the rest of Boston too!

Local Updates

Family Dollar will be opening on Corinth Street in the next few months, and RVMS has been working to ensure that the store's presence in the business district will be a positive one. Last month we met with representatives from the chain to offer input on storefront improvements, including installing appropriate signage and lighting and upgrading the building's run-down façade. We will continue to actively encourage Family Dollar to be a responsible and good neighbor in the community, while bringing more customers to the center of our business district.

Down the street past Village Market, Jimmies Ice Cream and Sandwiches will be opening its doors in mid-May. The old-fashioned ice cream parlor will feature take-out hard and soft serve ice cream, hot dogs and tofu pups, and lobster rolls. Roslindale Village Main Street has provided design and fabrication assistance to help the storefront enliven the block, and we look forward to welcoming Jimmies just in time for the summer months.

Another storefront improvement project made possible by a Main Street grant is underway at 749 South St., where a sleek new sign now announces the law offices of Pofcher, DiSciullo and Petruziello (which has been at that location for over 10 years). Look for further improvements to the building's façade and other three storefronts as the season progresses.

Development Proposal for Old Gas Station Site Approved by BRA After a positive response at community meetings late last year, a proposal to build a 3-story commercial and office building on the abandoned gas station site next to the Roslindale Branch Library is gaining momentum. In early February the plan was approved by the Boston Redevelopment Authority, and construction is expected to begin later this year. The building would house the Social Security Administration on the second floor, with offices on the top floor and retail space at ground level. Read about the project in the Roslindale Bulletin and the Boston Globe.

MBTA Substation Development Proposals Under Review For six years, RVMS has been the lead advocate for redevelopment of the vacant brick substation at Washington Street and Cummins Highway. In November, developers presented three different plans to the Boston Redevelopment Authority for this grand neighborhood landmark, and the community is eagerly awaiting a decision. Which one is the best for Roslindale? Click here for a short review of the proposals by Main Street's Economic Development committee. To read the three proposals in their entirety, click here.

Thanks For Making Roslindale Shine!
Thanks to everyone who turned out last Saturday to lend a hand for Roslindale's spring cleanup in conjunction with Boston Shines. We handed out tools, bags, gloves and T-shirts to more than 30 volunteers who worked all morning to pick up trash around the business district, mulch the neighborhood's greenspaces, and help spruce up the empty walkway to the Sumner Elementary School off Cummins Highway with paint, planters and benches. The photos above show how far some parts of the district have come in the last five years. Please contact us if you’d like to volunteer for future cleanup events around the neighborhood.
