Roslindale Green & Clean (RGC) is an exciting new nonprofit organization founded in 2005 and committed to improving and maintaining Roslindale’s public spaces through a combination of

  • advocacy,
  • education,
  • outreach activities, and
  • garden/landscape installation and maintenance in public areas.

RGC is sponsoring a variety of community events and collaborating with and supporting other Roslindale community organizations.

History

RGC is an outgrowth of the Roslindale House & Garden Tour, a volunteer effort that organized two very successful tours in 2002 and 2004. At the end of the 2004 tour, enthusiastic volunteers decided that it was important to capture the energy and enthusiasm of a growing group of volunteers by creating a new organization, RGC, that would meet regularly and explore other possible community activities.

To date, RGC has been involved in a variety of community projects in a variety of ways. RGC has:

  • supported a community organization, the Litter Posse, in an anti-litter campaign with a grant of $500;
  • participated in the Boston Tree Inventory Project, organized by the City of Boston, in 2004 and 2005;
  • worked with the City to design and install a new perennial garden around the perimeter of the Roslindale Public Library;
  • worked with the City to design and install complimentary plantings in the new traffic islands at the intersections of Belgrade and Corinth Streets;
  • sponsored two Green Garden Exchanges, a free community gardening education day in Roslindale Square;
  • distributed literature explaining to people how to request a street tree from the City; and
  • requested and watered new street trees planted in front of the Roslindale post office.

In the future we want to strengthen our relationships with community advocacy groups and find ways to collaboratively advocate for healthy and vibrant green and public spaces.
