Roslindale Business District Parking Discussion
April 25, 2007
In Attendance: Members of Roslindale Village Main Streets, Roslindale Board of Trade, Roslindale Health Center, local business owners, David McNulty/ Mayor’s Office, Lee Blasi/ Councilor Consalvo’s Office and two residents. This meeting was held to begin a discussion regarding parking in and around Roslindale Village
The following concerns were expressed.
- Commuters parking all day in Taft Hill lot and around the village.
- Business owners parking in front of their businesses all day.
- Business owners and employees being ticketed.
- Lack of parking spaces for shoppers in and around the village.
- Spillover of people parking on residential streets.
- Bus Stop at the corner of Washington and Corinth causes back-ups and difficulty making right hand turns.
- Patients of Roslindale Health Center being ticketed in Taft Hill lot.
- Insufficient number of handicap spaces in Taft Hill lot.
- Lack of designated “loading zone” spaces for customers of Wallpaper City.
Recommendations for review:
- Initiate some type of sticker system for businesses owners and employees that would be implemented by Main Streets and Roslindale Board of Trade for a fee. Sticker would be acknowledged by meter maids and others as legitimate only as to Taft Hill lot, not as to on street parking.
- Encourage use of the MBTA lot for owners and employees. Address safety concerns in that lot.
- Suspend enforcement of Taft Hill lot until a plan can be implemented
- Post short term parking times at certain locations (ex. at Post Office 15 min.) Post short term parking times appropriate to amount of time spent at location.
- Create small loading zone area for Wallpaper City.
- Investigate advantages/disadvantages of installing parking meters on Corinth Street and Taft Hill lot.
- Provide consistent enforcement of 2 hour parking on Corinth Street.
- Investigate the possibility of using “warning” flyers on cars who are consistent violators. Flyers provided by Area E-5 Community Service Office to those interested in posting them on cars.
- Designate Community Service Office to check-in with merchants posting the “warning” flyers.
- Investigate possibility of moving/removing bus stop at Corinth & Washington and installing designated right turn lane.
- Request Meter Maids from 7-9 a.m. in Taft Hill lot to observe/ticket commuters,
- Collect license plate numbers of commuters who use lot all day and pass on on give to police.
- Build second level of parking at Taft Hill lot. Look for alternative sites for additional parking.
David McNulty suggested that the group meet again within two weeks with Captain Hasson and Tom Tinlin from Boston Transportation to further the discussion.
