Farmers' Market Opens to Record Crowds
Opening Day of the 21st annual Roslindale Farmers' Market drew more than 1,500 visitors on Saturday, June 13th. Featuring an exciting array of new and returning vendors, including 5 local growers and 7 specialty food vendors, this year's market is the largest ever. Visitors to this year's market can expect to find a variety of fresh, local organic and conventional produce each week, along with plants, beef & pork, eggs, fresh breads and baked treats, preserves, and handmade gifts.

The market will provide a lively community gathering place each Saturday from 9 am-1 pm through October 17, with weekly live acoustic music and kids' activities being planned. 2009 Member Drive Update
RVMS' spring membership drive continues, and we are making great headway toward our goal of 500 or more resident members for 2009. As of June 30th, 380 members have joined, nearly half of those new members. We still need another 120 residents to join with a contribution of $25 or more to reach our goal. If you've already joined or renewed, thank you. Your contributions will help us continue to promote local business, build community pride and help our neighborhood weather the economic storm. If you haven't yet made a contribution, it's not too late! You can give online or send us a check anytime, visit Jody in the office M-Th, or stop by the Farmers' Market and chat with one of our volunteers, who will be at the Main Street tent every Saturday. Want to know more about how your contribution is spent to support Roslindale? Click here for a breakdown of our annual budget. For more on what we're doing in Roslindale, read our May guest column in the Transcript.

Roslindale...A Walker's Paradise
Walkscore.com, a website that rates neighborhoods by walkability, gives Roslindale a score of 92 out of 100, rating it a "Walker's Paradise". That's great news for Roslindale - a walkable neighborhood increases community and environmental health, adds to social capital by promoting face-to-face interaction with neighbors, and helps local businesses thrive.

Live Here, Eat Happy
Did you know that last month the Boston Globe Magazine deemed Roslindale a Top Spot to Live for Foodies? No surprise to those of us that live here and enjoy the neighborhood's abundance of fresh markets, bakeries and restaurants every day, but it's nice to know that we're getting noticed by the rest of Boston too!

Local Updates

While we were sorry to see the closing of Square Corner Cafe last month, there's been quite a buzz of new businesses opening in the neighborhood as well. Jimmies Ice Cream and Sandwiches opened its doors to excited crowds in May, and from the looks of it, business there has been booming. Boston Community Chiropractic opened recently on Washington Street, and down at the other end of the village by Healy Field, Roslindale Market plans to expand into the old Gooches Bakery space next door. After extended negotiations on improving the store's facade, Family Dollar will begin outfitting the store's interior and hopes to open within the month. Finally, it looks like one of Birch Street's long-vacant storefronts will be occupied soon. Felicity Sweets will be selling candy by the pound, specialty chocolates and other gifts by late summer.

MBTA Substation Development Proposals Under Review
The Boston Redevelopment Authority continues to hold proposals to redevelop the vacant MBTA substation building (at the corner of Washington and Cummins Highway) under review, saying they need to move carefully in light of the current economic climate. Read a recent update here. For seven years, RVMS has been the lead advocate for redevelopment of this historic building. Last November, developers presented three different plans to the Boston Redevelopment Authority for this grand neighborhood landmark, and the community is eagerly awaiting a decision. Which one is the best for Roslindale? Click here for a short review of the proposals by Main Street's Economic Development committee. To read the three proposals in their entirety, click here. Click here to read the 2002 feasibility study on the substation building, co-sponsored by RVMS and Historic Boston, Inc.

Development Proposal for Old Gas Station Site Approved by BRA After a positive response at community meetings late last year, a proposal to build a 3-story commercial and office building on the abandoned gas station site next to the Roslindale Branch Library is gaining momentum. In early February the plan was approved by the Boston Redevelopment Authority, and construction is expected to begin later this year. The building would house the Social Security Administration on the second floor, with offices on the top floor and retail space at ground level. Read about the project in the Roslindale Bulletin and the Boston Globe.
